Seeing Stars ... Mile-a-Minute

My online group of quilty friends is trading star fabric charms this month. I did some digging and found some great fabrics in my stash! I think they all look rather nice together. Can't wait to see the stars they send my way. Maybe I can use them to create a quilt based on Ps. 147:4 "He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name" or Ps. 8:3 & 4 "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?"

One of my goals for this week was to finally finish up my Mile-a-Minute top. I knew what I wanted to do borderwise, but I needed to find the right fabric. Hubby and I hit the Veterans' Day sale at Hancocks on Monday. I was trying to choose between 2 fabrics.. one was a pretty vibrant blue that seemed to tone the blocks down a bit... the other was a bright green that made them sing! As Hubby said "When have you ever gone the subdued route!?" LOL! He knows me so well! So green it is... but the blue is being used too... for the back and the binding.

I am going to try something knew for the quilting... new to me anyway. Stay tuned for the results!

Underground Sampler Done

My dd and I finished the Underground Railroad Sampler this week and, in fact, she gave her presentation on it and made an A! I think the sampler turned out very nice. It was a challenge to make these blocks... not for their difficulty, most were rather simple, but it seems this project came along in the midst of a turbulent time in our lives with a family death, health problems, a new job for my ds (so more time on the road taking him to and from) and more. But I've no doubt that my trials don't begin to compare to those of the slaves who travelled the UGRR and those who worked on it (providing shelter etc.).

Underground Blocks Done!

My daughter and I finished the Underground Railroad blocks this weekend. We only made 9 and they weren't difficult... it just seems that there has been no time or desire to sew lately. Following an unexpected death in the family, came an abscessed wisdom tooth which brought pain and then drugs! LOL! But life is working its way back to some sense of normalcy and so the sewing machine hummed again this weekend!

Sweet Memories Preserved

It seems I haven't blogged forever! The past 5 weeks have been surreal at times. On September 22, we were awakened to one of those phone calls you never want to get. My mother-in-law had died in her sleep. She was 79. Her passing was completely unexpected, as she was not ill with cancer or anything like that. But her health had declined recently and we learned that God had appointed September 22, 2007 as the day she was to come home to Him.

Her 3 children were in the process of planning a wonderful celebration for her 80th birthday in December and her only son, my sweet hubby, had pieced a beautiful quilt top as a surprise for her. His mother loved flowers and had green fingers! Hubby has inherited her love of things that bloom and blossom, so it was only fitting that he create a special Flower Garden for his mom.

We had even added a label to the back and had everything ready for him to quilt it.. in fact, that was his project for that weekend.

With the turn of events, another label was added and this weekend he finally picked up the quilt and poured out his love for his mom as he quilted her garden. And while she never got to see it or use it, I know she would have loved it... and I know it will be a cherished family treasure for generations to come.

Walker Bag Tutorial

My mother is an extremely active 76 year old who has arthritis in her knees, but she doesn't let that slow her down! She has started walking... more like running!... with a walker. She called me last night and said "I need some way to carry things on my walker. Can you take one of those totes you make and redo the handles somehow to hang it on the walker?" So I did some net surfing.. looked at various walker bags... read the how-tos... tweaked this and that and created this:

In case anyone wants to make one, here is how I did it.

I used regular 100% cotton fabric for the bag and a heavier cotton for the lining. I am sure a blend would work also, but you definitely need a lining to add some weight and stiffness. I cut 2 pieces of the outer fabric and 2 pieces of lining... 14 1/2" x 18 1/2".

Then I cut fabric for the tabs (handles). I used the outer fabric and, again, lining. I wanted these to be sturdy. I thought of using webbing like I do in tote handles, but I knew I would be putting buttonholes in these and didn't think that would work with webbing. So I cut 4 pieces from the outer fabric and 4 from the lining for the tabs. The pieces were 6" x 10".

I place a piece of the outer fabric, wrong side up, on the ironing board. Then I topped it with a piece of the lining fabric, right side up. I folded the top of both down about 1/2" and ironed in place. Then I turned them down again and ironed. I did this for the front and back pieces of the bag. I then sewed them down to create a clean edge that won't fray.

For each of the 4 tabs, I placed a piece of lining fabric and outer fabric together with wrong sides touching. Then I folded them in half, lengthwise, so that the outer fabric was touching itself.

I sewed around 3 sides of the tabs, leaving one short end open. Then I turned them wrong side out and ironed them flat.

Next I added button holes to each of the tabs. I put the side tabs about 1 1/2 in from the outer edge. I then added the side tabs to the front of one of the 2 fabric panels, pinning and then sewing in place. I also added the upper tabs. I sewed them to the back of the same panel, at the top, about 2 1/2" in from the outer edge. I used a box with an X in the center to secure the upper tabs.

Next I placed the 2 fabric panels with the right sides of the outer fabric together. The upper tabs are not effected as no sewing occurs on the top of the bag. The side panels are incorporated into the side seams. I made sure the tabs were facing into the bag between the panels, not sticking out. Pin the panels together and sew around the 2 sides and the bottom edges. I used a 1/2" seam allowance. Once sewn, I turned the bag right side out.

All that is left now is to add the buttons. I took the bag and, using safety pins, secured it to the walker. I then marked the placement of the buttons, removed the bag and sewed them on.

I feel certain I will make more of these and next time I will add some small pockets for keys, cell phone, sunglasses etc. These will be added to one side of the lining fabric before constructing the bag.

It took me a couple of hours to do this, but now that I have actually made one I think it can be done in about an hour. Not a difficult project at all.

Headed Underground.....

My daughter will be giving a presentation on the Underground Railroad later this semester in her American Lit class at college and for her Honors Forum. As part of her presentation, she is going to use the Underground Railroad Quilt. Now we both know (and have informed her professors) that there are those who believe that quilts really were used during the Underground RR and their are those who think it is a lot of "whooie." Even if it isn't true, the blocks can be used to represent various aspects of slavery and the UGRR and the quilt provides a wonderful teaching tool. SO we are making a small version using just 9 blocks. I made the first one last night. It is the Bow Tie block, which looks very different than the Bow Tie patterns I have seen. It was actually quite fun to make.... all Quarter Square Triangles! I think it turned out nicely. So one down.. 8 to go.. "Belle"

Real Men Quilt!

I am married to a "real" man... he is 6'5"... a big fella... no one would ever call him girlie... and so it surprises folks to learn that he quilts! When I started quilting in the Spring of 2004, he was my encourager.. then he became my assistant..he would iron fabric for me and cut it.. we brain stormed.. he helped me get refocused when I got frustrated. I would half-jokingly say "You should make a quilt one day... you would probably be better at it than me." So last fall, he decided to give it a try and now he is hook! He is a much faster quilter than I am. His time is limited, so when he gets a project going he becomes a bit single minded and works on it in all his "spare" time until it is done. He actually has a stack of tops ready to be quilted, so this weekend we sandwiched one and he quilted it in less than 24 hours. This is no small quilt... it is 80" x 90". The quilting is simple straight line quilting...but very effective. I especially love the back! I plan to spend lots of time cuddled up under this one once the winter temps come South! "Belle"

Busy Weekend

I haven't been able to do much sewing or quilting the last few weeks, do I was happy to get back into Sewing Central this weekend. I made 3 quillows... actually they are more like blillows.. blanket pillows. I didn't put batting in them nor did I quilt them. Mamaw Belle wanted a light weight blanket to take on the bus when she travels with her church group... and I decided to make some for a few of her friends. So I took a 60" length of flannel and a 60" length of cotton fabric... 1 WOF...I sewed a pocket on one side and then put them right sides together. Sewed all around leaving about an 8" opening. Turned it inside out and closed up the opening. Quick, easy and cute!

I also helped my dd make 3 more totes this weekend for the girls in her knitting class. She had more show up than planned! I think they turned out cute!

I also helped a special someone sandwich a quilt that was then quilted this weekend. I will post pictures and a bit about it soon!

Mile-a-Minute... or maybe a tad slower.. LOL!

I started working on my Mile-a-Minute quilt again today. I just haven't really been in a sewing mood for the last week or so. I love this quilt and know it will be wonderful when it is done, but I so don't want to finish. Ever feel that way? I love the beginning of a quilt.. the planning.. creating..but often I run out of steam at some point and get a bit bored.

As much as I want to start something new, I won't. I am determined to finish up some ongoing projects. Mile-a-Minute Quilt... 3 simple Quillows.... a String Quilt waiting to be quilted.... a Rag Christmas Quilt for my mom.

That should keep me busy for a while. Belle

Mother / Daughter time.....

My daughter loves crafts. She sews, quilts, knits, scrapbooks, create wonderful bead and wire jewelry, and more! She is known for her knitting. She takes it everywhere. The kids at church think it is cool and several have asked her to teach them to knit. So starting tomorrow afternoon, there will be a knitting class at our church.

She has a tote bag for each girl with some yarn, needles, instructions and other information. Tonight we made the last 2 bags. They are very basic, but turned out cute. In fact, she likes the blue one so much she is keeping it! LOL!

I love the bright colored tote... but then my friends will tell you I love bright colors! But there is more to it with this silly bag. The fabric we used is rather special to me. I have a gorgeous quilt made with it.

My sweet daughter worked around her class schedule and finals and work to make this for me last Christmas. She said I always made quilts for other folks and it was time I had one made just for me. She did an awesome job! The pattern is one she created.....fairly straight forward, like her... she had it quilted by a friend of ours who does long-arm quilting.. the pattern is butterflies. When this precious child was a wee one, she called them Flutter Flies, so that is the name she put on the label.

To have a quilt made just for you is a wonderful gift! I always worry folks will see the imperfections in the quilts I give them, but now I know that isn't true. The Bible says that Love covers a multitude of sins. Well in quilting, love covers all the imperfections! So when I look at Flutter Flies, I see the fun fabrics.. the bright colors... the great quilting.. but most of all I see the look on my daughter's face when she gave it to me.. a look of pure love... what more could a mom want!

Quilt Show

Earlier this month, my husband and I attended the Great Jackson Quilt Celebration. What a blast! This is small show compared to the biggies in Nashville, Houston and Paducah (actually everything is small compared to those 3!), but it was big to the quilters in our area. We loved having a show in our own backyard. The quilt above is one both hubby and I loved. We like bright!

There were also several quilt shops set up and doing a lot of business! Can we every really have enough fabric!? I bought a cute pattern and some terrific fabric. My daughter loves dragonflies. I am collecting dragonfly themed fabric for the dragonfly quilt I will one day make her. Aren't these lovely!?

Lots of Goodies!

I had a birthday a bit earlier this month and some of my online quilting buddies sent me happies to celebrate! I have fat quarters.... a new quilt book... and some really cute embroidered snowmen blocks to create a wall hanging. I am amazed at how I can remember things about fabric. I will see some of these in a quilt one day and say "I got those from my QWHT buddies for my birthday years ago!" I am also amazed at how far a piece of fabric can stretch! I love scrappy quilts, so I use every little bit of fabric I receive.

I've also received some wonderful pink charms this month. My QWHT buddies swap each month and this month's charm theme was Pink.... I assigned the themes to the months this year, so naturally my birthday month had to be PINK! LOL! Can't wait to use all these pink goodies in a quilt!

There's Work to Be Done!

A while back I found this great tutorial on another blog for making what the author called Mile-a-Minute blocks. I love things that are a bit wacky and quick and use up scraps! So these were right up my alley! I create blocks... sewed them together... and now I need to add something more. The quilt isn't quite as big as I would like. I was thinking about a simple border.. actually 2. A small inner border and then a larger outer one. But what fabric? There are so many colors in this quilt already. I have tried different combos with solids and prints.. nothing seems to work for me. Now I am thinking I might make a Mile-a-Minute border. I would frame it between 2 strips of another fabric... probably a solid. Hopefully I will get to work on that soon.

I am also in the midst of my first ever Round Robin with a group of online friends. I have a great RR right now... I just keep changing my mind on what I want to add! Getting it done and off to the next person is my top priority... since it has to be mailed out by next Friday!

And I have quillows to make! I made my first quillow this summer for a friend of my mom's.... and now mom and another of her friends wants one. These ladies are on the go all that time! They are all 71 and older. They travel with their church group (the quillows are for keeping warm on buses).... they eat out or at each other's homes regularly... they volunteer.... play Mexican Train Dominoes at least once a week... and talk on the phone worse than any teenager ever did! They are a hoot and I love it!

So those are my current projects.... hopefully they will all be done by the end of September! Now if I can just find some sewing time!

Giving Blogs a Try....

I have been reading blogs for a while now.. and have played around with the idea of jumping in and starting my own.. so here it goes!

I am a fairly new quilter... began in the spring of 2004. I am self taught and know for being a bit of a rebel and not always following the rules. I am not out to win awards or accolades... just to have fun and share my love through quilts for my friends and family.
